NBS Solutions for Banks based on DocBridge Mill

[Böblingen/Boston, December 11, 2007] – Many banks are limited by legacy systems and proprietary software that prevent them from maximizing the value of their statements as relationship tools. One NBS bank customer was stuck with outdated statements that did not communicate the brand of a progressive bank. Also, the bank couldn’t take advantage of postal discounts without purchasing new sorting software and inserting hardware.

Further inefficiency resulted when the bank holding company data center would push print data out to each of its member banks for local printing and inserting. Individually, the banks lacked volume for postal discounts, and each statement was sent at the highest first class rate. Centralization of the statement processes wasn’t an option due to the large investment required, and the ramp up for training and implementation.

Using DocBridge Mill software, NBS was able to offer the bank a service that eliminated the problems of outmoded statement appearance, non-existent postal discounts and labor-intensive processes. The bank immediately saved $36,000 in postage, plus avoided an expense of $125,000 by not having to acquire infrastructure to centralize the process.

Statement-related manual labor was also dramatically reduced. The bank eliminated six full time positions dedicated to statement inserting and reallocated staff to other areas and budgets. Printing expenses were reduced by more than half, and postage costs dropped dramatically. The bank was printing internally at around 8-12 cents per page. Now the bank pays a fraction of that for printing and inserting by NBS. Monthly production cycles went from eight to two.

Most importantly, the bank can now take maximum advantage of the high perceived value of the monthly statement by including personalized messages in each document. As a result, the bank is better able to use statements as marketing and relationship tools without incurring additional expense to send out more promotional communications.

Before, the legacy software made it difficult to import pre-composed financial data files and separate content to sort documents and reformat legacy statements. Now using DocBridge Mill software, NBS takes output in PDF format from the old software and works with the statement data for postal processing, presort, CASS and PAVE processing. NBS now can easily split, modify, reconstruct and presort the data to help banks create documents that are more appealing and cost-effective. The result is significant postal savings, from 41 to 33 cents per piece, as well as an improved look and greater marketing value for statements.

“The solution is ideal for small to mid-sized banks now using manual processes to prepare monthly statement mailings, while paying the highest postage per unsorted piece. It opens up new market opportunity for NBS in services that realize more savings and expand marketing efforts for our bank customers,†said NBS President Joe Tafs.

With expanded data capabilities enabled by DocBridge Mill , NBS can capture new business from banks that need easier statement reformatting and reduced postage costs. In fact, DocBridge software has already helped NBS leverage a potential billion-dollar market opportunity within the banking industry.

NBS Director of Software Development, Rick Scherping, also anticipates speed enhancements, functional ease and processing reliability because of using DocBridge Mill software. “Compart supplied a turnkey package, and we essentially just run the software without concerns about compatibility and integration.†As a result, adoption and ROI have come faster. “What was challenging was the opportunity relative to the timeline,†said Scherping. “Support was also deciding factor in Compart’s favor. Compart responded very quickly, usually solving problems within a day.â€
